It was a lovely hot summer day at the Pena Adobe Park in Vacaville, the grounds for the seventh annual Festival De La Isla where Puerto Rican culture is evident everywhere.
The colorful flag of the island-nation has taken shape in T-shirts, tank tops, hats, and other special merchandise sold in booths. Local restaurant stands were serving delicious foods of the island that included my favorite tostones.
People, content, rested in their beach chairs under the large canopies they had set up earlier. The festivities got under way as DJ Bosco spun merengue, salsa, and bachata.
Orquesta Bakan took the stage and started with a bang on their energetic slasa dura repertoire. Dancers from the very young to not so young hit the dance floor that was set up in front of the stage, but dancing continued on the grass and in all sections of the park.
Entertainment director, Jose Guaman, drove the rhythm on his bongos, and musical director Victor “Café” switched places between lead singing and playing his timbales.
Next came Grupo Avance with their special sound and directed by their well known bandleader, San Francisco’s own Karl Perazzo, on timbales. He has long been a percussionist for stars like Carlos Santana and others. At the end of their set he was seen autographing copies of the new Avance CD “Incontrolable”.
When the white stretched limo pulled up near the back of the stage everyone knew that the headliner of the event had arrived from New York. Yes, Rey Sepulveda and his wife settled in the dressing room.
He was in a very relaxed mood as I interviewed him.
The Festival de la Isla Orquesta consisted of star quality musicians from numerous bands of the San Francisco Bay Area (Christian Tumalan on piano, Victor “Café” timbales, Karl Perazzo on bongos and bell, and the back up vocals of Louis Acosta and Alexis Guillen) took to the stage as the booming voice of the announcer came : “Ladies and gentlemen, directly from New York, Rey Sepulveda”
Festival goers had already gathered in front of the stage and as he started his repertoire, arms were stretched up swaying to the left and to the right on rhythm. It climaxed with a roar when he started singing one of his top hits “No Vale La Pena Enamorarse”. Everyone was singing along !
Congratulations to Linda & Victor “Café” August and the entire crew for staging this great event!
